Increasing Magnitude Increases Your Perspective

On April 1st of this year we bought our new home.  Moving out of the city a bit out “into the boonies” we purchased an older home on a 5.5 acre lot.  The land size of our previous home was less than 5,000 sq. ft.  The square footage of 5.5 acres is over 240,000 sq. ft.  Unless you’re a farmer, that is a massive size of land, especially if you’re used to living in the city.  I love it out here.  It is so peaceful.

One of the greatest things of living on a piece of land this big is looking at the magnitude of the “back yard”.  It’s huge!  I haven’t even seen my whole property yet.  I would estimate that 80% of the land is still uncleared, meaning it’s covered by trees and bush.  It will be my job over the coming years to transform this land from trees, brushes, dirt and mud into a beautiful landscape.  It has only been a couple of weekends I’ve had outside “working the land” and I must say I totally love it.  I’m not typically one for a lot of manual labor, but for some reason this is so awesome.

Most of the jobs I’ve done in my life have been around computers and management and I’ve always gotten paid for my ability to think and work with people, not because of the amount of physical work I perform.  A job involving daily physical labor is not my idea of a fun time, and I admire people who have the strength to do it day in and day out.  Doing the work out here has been totally different though.  It’s been so long since I’ve done any major physical work I’ve totally forgotten how gratifying it can be to “build something” physically.  It’s one thing to make some money and hire someone to build something for you and another to go out and do it yourself.

Property Pics

The magnitude of this “project” has totally changed my perspective.  After clearing what I can only estimate as “a few thousand” bushes in an area of my property I plan to run a fence through, bushes no longer scare me.  A good pair of work boots, some good gloves, proper eye protection and a few STIHL power tools and I’m ready to dive into the bush.  Everything on this property has to be done in a big way.  You don’t buy a hand held branch pruner, you buy a STIHL power pruner (chainsaw on a stick, basically).  You don’t buy a weedwacker, you buy a brush cutter (circular saw on a stick basically).  You don’t buy a lawnmower and a wheel-barrel, you buy a John Deere tractor, LOL.  You have to invest in proper tools, or the land will eat you for breakfast.

What’s great about jumping magnitudes like this is that it totally changes your perspective.  It’s like a newly started catering service getting their first contract to do a 500 person wedding.  After that, little 50 person parties seem easy.  It’s like writing a Stephen King novel.  After that, writing a blog entry would be easy!

What “project” can YOU do in a big way in your life?  If you’re into the Law of Attraction, try attracting something really big into your life.  See how your perspective on life totally changes when you start a project that will take you 10+ years to complete, instead of a weekend.  You might be surprised how a big project in your life can change your perspective on everything.  If you can get past the initial feelings of overwhelm and feeling out of your league, a silent confidence grows within that speaks to you and tells you that all this time you may have been settling for a lot less than you really are capable of.

  1. Hey Great Post Paul,
you are absolutely correct in that increasing magnitude does reap its benefits. I been personally involved in human development and life coaching for many years and the fundamental key that i have learnt and thought, is that we must grow. By growing i mean in a sense of moving foward, doing more difficult things, more things, intergrating ourselfs. It definately does affect your prespective and influence who you end up becoming as an individual. It allows you to take on even harder challenges in the future. I belive this can serve many people and i like to thankyou for this empowering insight. I love to share some of my personal experiences with you in my blog over here if your interested.
    To your future success
