Balancing the Selfworker and Worldworker Inside You

This article is going to define and bring to your awareness two subtle but very important energy elements that I have recently come to understand the importance of during my discussions in the Steve Pavlina message forums. They are my own perspective variations on Steve Pavlina’s Polarization series of articles. My findings don’t directly correlate with his, but rather offer a completely different perspective on the importance of learning to balance these two energies. To start, let me define the two terms so we have a basis for understanding of what I mean by Selfworker and Worldworker.

Selfworker energy is energy that is directly related towards your Self. When you act out of Selfworker energy your primary energy is focused on anything and everything to do with improving your Self. The Selfworker’s perspective is that there is no better use of time or energy than to work on improving one’s Self. The Selfworker’s belief is not only that the best way to help the world is to help your Self, it is also that it is the ONLY way to help the world.

This is not an egotistical or “selfish” statement, it is simply the belief that we really have no control over anyone else, except ourselves so truly the best thing we could ever do is to help ourselves become the best people we possibly can. Instead of looking at how we can help the world, we look at the world as a mirror of our own problems and we work on “fixing” those problems by “fixing” ourselves. That may be accomplished by reading, taking courses, going to seminars, hiring a coach, training, or any number of activities to improve one’s Self.

Please keep in mind that a conscious Selfworker acts out of Love. It is simply Self Love. It doesn’t mean that the person is mean or negative or destructive towards others, and it doesn’t mean the person doesn’t care about others, it simply means that he is highly conscious of his own need to Self improve above all else. The Selfworker goes on about his day, working to improve himself and doesn’t look at the flaws of others as flaws in them, but rather as a reflection of a flaw within himself that still needs to be worked out.  A highly conscious Selfworker doesn’t judge others who haven’t helped themselves yet.

Selfworker’s believe that they can best influence the world for the positive by working relentlessly on improving themselves and to act as an inspiration to others. Selfworker’s teaching path is to lead by example. A Selfworker will become totally healthy and sculpt his body as a way to inspire others to do the same, or will become a multi-millionaire to inspire others as well. His path of helping others will be to empower them to help themselves.

Selfworker’s low on the consciousness scale can fall into “Selfworker Syndrome” where they are actually acting out of fear instead of love. Selfworkers who fall into “Selfworker Syndrome” would become arrogant, high on themselves, begin to intellectualize everything and try to prove everyone wrong, isolate themselves from others etc. Their primary goal is to develop and grow their EGO Self, not their True Self (spirit). I’m sure we’ve all met at least one “Selfworker Syndrome” sufferer in our lives. They can be very intelligent, but highly annoying. They typically present themselves as highly intelligent, highly confident and witty, but really underneath the surface they are actually very insecure and suffer from low self esteem. Their Ego is easily bruised and they will rage an attack on you if you push them too far.

It is really important to realize that while “Selfworker Syndrome” sufferers are really draining individuals to be around and give Selfworker’s the negative connotation we’ve experienced around being “selfish”, highly conscious Selfworker’s are nothing like that. Highly conscious Selfworker’s are truly self-confident, and therefore are very fun to be around because they teach you things, encourage you and empower you to improve your self as well and have no need to put you down or prove to you that you’re wrong because they don’t need to put you down to make themselves feel better. Highly conscious Selfworker’s are typically very successful; having earned everything themselves in whichever areas of life they’ve chosen to excel at (typically everything).

Now lets talk about the Selfworker’s opposite energy cousin, the Worldworker.

Worldworker energy is energy that is directly related towards the world at large. When you act out of Worldworker energy your primary energy is focused on anything and everything to do with improve the world around you. The Worldworker’s perspective is that there is no better use of time or energy than to work on improving the world. The worldworker’s belief is not only that the best way to help ones Self is to help the world, it is also that it is the ONLY way to help one Self.

Worldworker’s feel a deep connection to the world and feel that above all it is their duty to help the world. Worldworker’s do not concern themselves with personal achievements, money or any other personal accomplishments. They simply live to help the whole world in some way, shape or form. Their highly conscious Worldworker perspective allows them to simply help the world and trust that they will be taken care of themselves.

Worldworker’s don’t need to focus or exerting energy on meeting their basic needs in life, and often live simple, yet comfortable lives. It doesn’t meant they do not possess wealth. In fact, a lot of Worldworkers command massive amounts of fortune except that they use it to help the world, not themselves. They get joy and fulfillment from seeing changes in the world that they were instrumental in bringing about. They are acting out of Love towards the world.

Worldworker’s low on the consciousness scale can fall into “Worldworker Syndrome” which is basically the fear driven Worldworker who has very low self esteem and wants to help the world but is powerless to do so. They have not taken the time to overcome their personal fears and as such they find it very difficult to provide value to the world in any way shape or form, and get frustrated with the fact that they don’t seem to feel appreciated. They feel guilt about receiving anything from anyone and often shy away from money because they don’t want to seem selfish. They are deathly afraid of helping themselves because they feel they should be helping the world.

Once again, “Worldworker Syndrome” sufferers can be very draining, even more draining than “Selfworker Syndrome” sufferers because they are completely not self reliant. They often will count on you to provide for them in emergency situations feeling extremely guilty in the process. Whereas Selfworker Syndrome sufferers are prone to lashing out in anger and violence when pushed too hard, Worldworker Syndrome suffers are more prone to states of depression and self-hatred.

Having said that, a highly conscious Worldworker is a joy to be around because they are highly giving individuals who have no problem giving you anything you ask of them without judgment, reservation or expecting anything in return. They are always working on new projects that have huge impact on the world at large and inspire you to do the same.

So, having defined the two energy patterns, I have developed an exercise where you can learn to balance out the two sides within yourself. Almost everyone I know is naturally biased towards one side, but by learning to get in touch with the positive aspects of the other side it will really help gain new awareness and clarity in your life, your goals and your dreams.

To perform the exercise, start with a goal or project or intention that you have that’s fairly substantial, like a new business idea or a new book you’re thinking of writing or a new career path etc.  I’ll use my planning process for this blog as an example.

The first thing I do is I sit down with a piece of paper or a word processor, and I write out the topic I wish to explore. In this example it would be this blog. Then, I write the sentence “I’m now putting my Selfworker hat on and I see this blog helping me by…”

I then sit there and thinking PURELY from a Selfworker perspective, without any concern or worry or attention to anything to do with the world, I think about how can this blog help me in developing and loving my true Self even more. Pretend that the blog has already made a huge impact on helping the world, and now we’re just trying to define how it also helped my Self. As an example I might write the following:

I’m now putting my Selfworker hat on and I see this blog helping me by…
… developing and honing my writing skills
… increasing my understanding of building an online blog, marketing it and generating traffic
… allowing me to meet like minded individuals / contacts in the industry
… developing an additional income source
 … etc.

I then start a new page and now I totally forget about myself. I pretend like my Self is already taken care of. Everything I wanted to achieve out of running the blog has been achieved and I do not have to worry about that anymore. I now put on my Worldworker hat and I think about PURELY helping the world. So, as an example I might write:

I’m now putting on my Worldworker hat and I see this blog helping the world by…
…offering self help information free of charge
… inspiring others to achieve the results I’ve achieved
… offering a unique perspective on self help topics not available anywhere else
… building a community of like minded individuals to meet and discuss ideas
 … etc.

Ok, so now I take off both hats and I look at the two lists I have and I merge them into one integrated list that now very clearly defines in my mind why I am doing this. It is an integrated plan that takes care of both sides of the coin, allowing both Selfworker and Worldworker energy to be present.

For me personally, being able to balance these two energies has led to a lot of success in life and I would encourage you to look at your current projects to see if they have been looked at from both perspectives.  You might also want to check to make sure you’re not suffering from either Worldworker or Selfworker Syndromes.

Keep in mind that you’re not always going to have a 50% / 50% split between Selfworker and Worldworker energy for all of your projects. Some projects are going to be much more Self oriented and others much more World oriented, but taking the time to at least consider both sides can lead to some great insights and in my experience I’ve always found that projects that are in the best interest of both my Self and the World tend to flow much better, they tend to be more successful and they tend to be more fulfilling.

I hope this helps you to integrate more balance into your life.  Enjoy!
